"Just had two more sales!" one of the Biggest Bake Sale volunteers hollered as she ran across the parking lot to make sure the 12 treats she'd just sold were registered against the World Record attempt number as the final minutes of the 8 hour record attempt counted down.
From the megaphone of the bright purple muscle car, Vince Bertolucci, watching the official timing stopwatch counted down "5...4...3...2...1..." and with a trumpet blast the World Record attempt was complete.
"We knew it was close" said WBBS founder Maria Michel "but we had to do the math to figure out the exact numbers. Setting a World Record involves a lot of paperwork. We had double sign off sheets for both treat counts and fund raising cash count."
When the day was done, the World's Biggest Bake Sale has sold a total of 12,659 baked goods. A mere 426 treats short of bringing the World Record to Kitchener Waterloo!
"We couldn't believe how many people showed up right at 10am for the start of the world record attempt. Sales were above our required average until noon and then again we had an unbelievable number of people visiting from 2PM until 4PM when we had face painting and a stilt walker entertaining the kids."
By projected estimates, it looked like the record would be coming to Kitchener Waterloo. "Unfortunately, sales tapered off around 5PM and we just missed the World Record target." The Biggest Bake Sale does however take the title of Canada's Biggest Bake Sale and raised exactly $13,006.40 for Kitchener Grand-River Rotary Charities, an organization which benefits over 16 charities including KidsAbility and local charities like St John’s Kitchen, House of Friendship and YWCA Mary’s Place.
"We couldn't have done this without assistance from our generous sponsors and all the help from the Boardwalk at Ira Needles and their retailers." said Chris Mintz, Director of Marketing. "They gave us a spot where community, local businesses and charity could come together"
"I really did enjoy myself and so many will benefit from the effort" said volunteer Cheryl Street Kane, one of the hundreds of volunteers including bakers, treat sales, treat re-stockers and a variety of brave individuals who played Mr Cookie throughout the day. We're still not sure who would win in a race between Mr Cookie and Vince Bertolucci but we know they’d stop for some tasty baked goods from the World’s Biggest Bake Sale along the way.

We're doing really good towards our target of having enough baked goods to set the record. We still have room for more for EPIC bakers!
"Everything in moderation," my mother used to say to me in regards to delicious sugary treats, and why would you deny yourself the joy that comes from a sweet chocolaty morsel of baked goodness? Sometimes we're looking for a healthier version of our favourite goodies, or have made dietary choices that we would like to see reflected in our desserts.
Gluten Free treats are made with ingredients that do not contain the protein, gluten that it is in flours such as wheat and other related grains such as spelt, barley and rye. Typically this involves substituting wheat flour with a rice, chick pea or alternative flour. Gluten substitutues include mixing arrowroot with a little water, other starches, or pureed fruit. While our gluten free treats are acceptable for Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity, we are not certified for 100% Gluten Free and our treats are not recommended for those with Celiac Disease.
Vegan treats are made using the vegan diet standard. This means that these treats contain NO animal products whatsoever. Eggs, milk, shortening and butter are all ingredients that are not allowed in a vegan treat. Many great substitutes are being created by the food sciences that have very similar tastes. Carob is replacing milk chocolate, almond and rice milks are replacing the classic dairy milk. Eggs can also be replaced by mashed bananas, flax seed or applesauce and certain oils can replace butter in dessert recipes.
Sugar free treats are made without the use of simple refined sugars. A sugar free treat may still contain complex sugars like Fructose when fruits such as mango or prune compote are used to sweeten the treat. Natural substitutes such as agave, stevia and maple syrup can also be used. In general however, the recipe will typically contain no added basic sugar. The complex sugar Lactose is also found in milk and starches from wheat flour break down into sugars when digested. A truly sugar free treat would also be vegan and gluten free. Our sugar free treats should be considered "sugar reduced."
A limited number of Gluten Free, Vegan and Sugar Free treats will be available for purchase at the Biggest Bake Sale. Come early, don't miss getting your hands on them while they last!
Guinness World Records that are time based require you to achieve the record in your time period to the 100th of a second! That's some precise timing, and we'll have professional timers on hand to ensure we stick to exactly 8 hours of treat sales.
We need a sound to start off this EPIC record attempt though. At first we thought air horn - but we figured we could be more creative than that! A starter's pistol? Maybe not, that might scare too many people. How about a vuvuzela? See, now you're thinking! How about a sousaphone? Even better! Ties into the great German heritage of our town!
What do you guys think? What EPIC loud noise should we use to signal the start of our Guiness World Record attempt on Saturday, August 17th?
Post your idea on our Facebook Event Page or tweet us over @KWBigBakeSale - if it's something only you can do, you may get the honour of starting this event!
In order to bring the Guinness Book World Record to Kitchener-Waterloo on August 17th at the Boardwalk at Ira Needles, we need to sell over 13,085 baked treats... in an 8 hour period. The number of treats sold is dictated by the current record holder who set this record in May of this year.
The timing is very strict as well! In accordance with the Guinness rules, the 8 hour period is timed to the 100th of the second and is monitored by 2 professional timers! The number of baked goods sold also needs to be verified by a Chartered Accountant and the entire event will be video taped for prosperity.
Fortunately all we need YOU to do is eat some baked goods (after making a charitable purchase of course). In order to sell over 13,100 baked goods in an 8 hour perioud we need to sell an average of 14 treats a minute. Whoa...
We plan to do this by having The World's Biggest Bake Sale setup as SIX walk up tables throughout the Boardwalk and one giant Drive-Thru! Yes you read that correctly - keep the family with you in the car as you cruise through our baked goods Drive-Thru lanes! It's going to be a challenge, but it wouldn't be a World Record if it wasn't. Come out and support chairity while grabbing some tasty treats on August 17th!
We caught up with Vince B on his training run yesterday and he gave us a great rundown on The World's Biggest Bake Sale! Check out what Vince has to say about this great charity event!
Originally called a black moon, a bob or BFO for Big Fat Oreo this is one baked good that can fall into several baked good classifications seeing as it can be considered a cookie, a pie or a cake! This sweet treat is made from two round pieces of chocolate or gingerbread cake has a delicious frosty filling in the middle. The origin is thought to be from the Pennsylvania Amish who would bake a treat they called a "Hucklebuck" and put them in the farmer's lunch boxes. It is believed that the original "Hucklebucks" were created from cake batter leftovers!
Whoopie Pies became more popular around 2010 and on March 26th, 2011, the world's largest Whoopie Pie was created weighing in at 1,062 lbs! The World's Biggest Bake Sale already has EPIC Bakers who plan to make Whoopie Pies for the Aug 17th World Record attempt - but these treats will sell out fast so don't miss your chance to get yours!
Vince was having a little run around The Boardwalk at Ira Needles when he spotted some World's Biggest Bake Sale posters! We love seeing the retail community helping us promote this great event! If you see our poster, drop us a line and we'll get Vince to go out and get a picture with your store front for our site!
None of this coule be done without the assistance financially and through donations of goods and equipment from our retail and commercial sponsors. We want to thank you so much
Hello to all our currently registered EPIC bakers! It's so great to see the community rally together to have fun setting a World Record in support of Kitchener Grand-River Rotary Charities. Later this week we will be coordinating with all of you on delivery of treats etc. All of this information is currently available on our EPIC Baker FAQ.
If you were thinking of signing up to be an EPIC baker but haven't done it yet, now is your chance! We still have a couple dozen spots left for EPIC Bakers! Don't miss the chance to be a part of a Guinness World Record attempt! Treats don't need to be complicated, in fact, we still need about a dozen more bakers just to make brownies!
If you're a home based baker or a commercial bakery, you are more than welcome to promote your services by attaching a sticker or business card to your donated treats! We love promoting the baker talent in the KW Region!
What's better than enjoying savoury treats while setting a Guiness World record? How about benefitting the Kitchener Grand-River Rotary charities while we're at it! All funds raised from the World's Biggest Bake Sale go to the many local charities that the Rotary Club of Kitchener Grand River support including St John's Kitchen, National Service Dogs, House of Friendship, YWCA Mary's Place, KidsAbility, the Waterloo Education Foundation and more. By the time we break the World Record on Aug 17th we hope to have raised over $20,000 for these wonderful charities that give to our community in need.
If your mother were here this would definitely be the one day she would encourage you to have two desserts.
Vince is an inspiration to the Running Rarebits. Though he thinks himself the team captain, he's more like a mascot. Vince does keep in decent shape and participates in the Running Rarebit events, but his training runs often end when he passes a pizza parlour or a restaurant that serves spaghetti.
VInce believes himself to be an up and coming Canadian Track star and maybe be on the next olympic track team. Shhhh - nobody tell him any different.
Mostly harmless... unless you're a plate of pasta.
Also known as Cake Balls or Cakesickles, these treats have been sweeping the baking world by storm since they started appearing out of popular baking kitchens and shows back in 2010. A Cake Pop is essentially baked cake that is broken up into pieces, then assembled back into balls. They are then coated in icing or chocolate and often mounted on a stick for enjoyment without getting sticky hands. This is also an important part of getting it's delicious chocolate shell.
Right after being dipped in chocolate the Cake Pops can also be rolled in coconut, sprinkles, cocoa or be decorated with other types of coloured cholcate. How does a Red Velvet Cake Pop sound right about now? The World's Biggest Bake Sale already has EPIC Bakers who plan to make Cake Pops for the Aug 17th World Record attempt - but these treats will sell out fast so don't miss your chance to get yours!
Bre Creative are bringing their face painting talents to The World's Biggest Bake Sale! Come have your face painted from 2pm - 4pm and grab some delicious baked goods while you're at the Boardwalk at Ira Needles. Get your face painted while supporting the Kitchener Grand-River Rotary Charities.
People are asking us about how they can help spread the word and make The Biggest Bake Sale a Canadian success story. So we created THE FAN ZONE! It's got flyers you can distribute, all of our social media handles, and even some fun pictures you can spread around.
Businesses across the Kitchener Waterloo region have been stepping up to help out The Biggest Bake Sale World Record attempt! Check out some of the generous businesses around the region who have helped us out already.
We still need a little more equipment to pull this off however, mainly tables and shade tents to keep our volunteers comfortable as we attempt to break a World Record! If you're able to help out with some of our equipment needs, drop us a line. You can find a list of eqipment that we're looking for on our Supplies Needed page.
Are you on Facebook? Why not come jump over to our Facebook event page and drop us a line! Leave us a comment about The Biggest Bake Sale!
